Wetter than Expected

This afternoon I caught up with some of my lovely outdoor friends, one of them a Forest Schools and Beach Schools buddy so where else to go but the beach. It was also the perfect opportunity for Little Man to test out his new waterproofs. The old ones were starting to let in a bit too much water. We visited a localish beach which Little Man has been to a few times before, but this time as soon as we arrived he started saying ‘ter’, his word for water. We couldn’t even see the sea yet so he must have remembered where we were!

Donned in his new waterproofs and his wellies we headed out to meet the girls. The tide was already most of the way in and Little Man pointed out all the birds and boats along the way. We were a little bit late so when we arrived the girls had already started creating works of art in true Beach Schools style, something Little Man took absolutely no notice of. He was far more interested in picking up whatever he could find and throwing it into the ‘ter’.

Not long after we had retreated to a bench along the sea wall because the tide had stolen most of the beach we spotted one last bit of beach holding on. I zoomed Little Man down there and started splashing. Little Man got very excited and before I knew it he was rushing into the sea. My first thought was ‘Oh no! He’s wellies will be completely filled with water’ but before I could stop him the sea had already knocked him over and he was face down and completely soaked from head to foot. In the same instant I whipped him out expecting to hear a wailing cry but he just stood there a bit stunned but really not that bothered at all. Talk about test his waterproofs out! I have to say though, the water had creeped into his wellies, up over the dungarees and up the arms of his coat so he truly was soaked! I know I shouldn’t have laughed but I couldn’t help it, it was rather funny.

We played for a bit longer, before deciding to head back and dry the little monster off. On the way back there was a constant squelching as Little Man walked and as one of the girls carried him back to the car in a superman maneuver his wellies started pouring out sea water! He really didn’t mind though. There was a quick change into some warm dry clothes and then it was off for some seaside chips. Thanks girls, for a lovely, if not very wet time.

It sounds like you had a lovely time at the beach! I did giggle when, even armed with wellies and waterproofs he managed to get soaked still. The beach is a fab playground regardless of the season and there is always fun to be had. Thanks for linking up and sharing your adventures with Country Kids.

Kids will find the water, mud and sand even when you don’t expect it. You described it so well I could just picture it! I made the mistake of planning a “walk along the beach” last fall as a family when we were near the coast. Ended up with a 3.5 year old wet and covered with sand, head to toe, an hour before we needed to leave for the airport!
